  • Description

This nine-part online training series provides an essential foundation for understanding safe electrical work practices based on codes and standards to help avoid electrical injuries, deaths, and OSHA violations.

Based on NFPA 70E®, Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace®, the NFPA® Safe Electrical Work Practices Online Training program was built with the working electrician in mind. Interactive, scenario-based exercises place participants in realistic, controlled environments where they can test their knowledge and skill set by accomplishing tasks faced on the job every day.

Staying safe is the #1 priority, and even the most seasoned contractor will gain valuable knowledge from this self-paced program. Through a combination of video and other high-definition media, the user will experience the application of NFPA 70E rather than just a review of the standard.

This training is a "must have" for anyone who works in the electrical contracting industry.

Upon completion you should be able to:

    • Describe the relationship between NFPA 70E and OSHA standards
    • Identify hazards associated with the task, equipment, and environment
    • Establish an electrically safe work condition (ESWC)
    • Determine if energized electrical work is justified
    • Identify shock and arc flash hazard personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements
    • Compare the scope of maintenance between NFPA 70E and NFPA 70B, Recommended Practice for Electrical Equipment Maintenance
    • Identify the presence of unique electrical energy hazards

    Who Will Benefit:
Anyone concerned with electrical safety, including electrical engineers, safety managers, electricians, electrical contractors, plant managers, facility maintenance personnel, electrical inspectors, risk managers, mechanical engineers, HVAC installers, designers, and project managers.

    Continuing Education Credit:
Complete this nine-hour course series and qualify for 0.8 CEUs.
Module 1 is 15 minutes, module 2 is 30 minutes and module 5 is 75 minutes. The rest of the 6 modules are 1 hour each. 1 CEU is issue per one full hour. Upon successful completion of the course series, participants will be prompted to download the CEU certificate directly from the course site.

Please verify applicability with your professional board or organization before registering.

  • Introduction/Scope of Training

    Introduction/Scope of Training

Electrical injury is a significant concern for contract workers and in particular electricians, with dozens of injuries and fatalities occurring every year that were preventable. This brief, introductory module will review the critical importance of electrical safety as it relates to NFPA 70E and will provide detailed course objectives for each remaining course.

  • Electrical Safety Fundamentals | Electrical Safety Program Components

    Electrical Safety Fundamentals

The Electrical Safety Fundamentals module offers an essential review of the vital definitions and terms related to NFPA 70E. You'll receive a reminder about OSHA requirements tied to Article 90 as well as the scope of NFPA 70E.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Interpret the relationship between NFPA 70E and OSHA standards
    • Identify the scope of NFPA 70E
    • Explain essential NFPA 70E definitions

    Electrical Safety Program Components

This module covers the roles and responsibilities on the job site and wherever electrical safety is needed. You'll be immersed in the components of an electrical safety program, including training, retraining, qualified persons, test equipment, and more. Engage in a media-rich simulation of troubleshooting a malfunctioning air handling control unit. You'll be required to select the correct testing meter and set the meter and leaders to the proper positions based on the information provided about the equipment.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Identify the components of an electrical safety program
    • Distinguish between electrical safety employer responsibilities and employee responsibilities
    • Determine qualified person requirements for a given task and equipment
    • Select and set up a test instrument for a given task and equipment
  • Establishing an Electrically Safe Work Condition

Establishing an Electrically Safe Work Condition

Learn how to organize and maintain an electrically safe work environment through media-rich simulations in different real-life scenarios. Go on the job with Mike, our virtual electrical worker, and Tony, the electrical safety specialist consultant hired to accompany him to make sure updated electrical safety procedures are being followed. Follow the narrative and problem-solve your way through completing jobs, including lockout/tagout procedures with interactive functionality that either confirms your knowledge or provides alerts that you have made a wrong decision with background information on the potential consequences.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Establish an electrically safe work condition (ESWC)
    • Identify the components of a lockout/tagout program
    • Choose the appropriate lockout/tagout equipment
    • Examine the required lockout/tagout procedures
  • Risk Assessment

    Risk Assessment

Perform an electrical hazard analysis consisting of a shock risk assessment and arc flash risk assessment. This helps determine whether you are able to work safely in an energized environment, or whether an electrically safe work condition must be established.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Determine if energized electrical work is justified
    • Complete an energized electrical work permit
    • Perform a shock risk assessment
    • Perform an arc flash risk assessment

  • PPE | Hazard Recognition for Special Equipment

    PPE

Learn how to determine the need for PPE based on the task and also how to maintain and inspect PPE based on Article 130 of NFPA 70E. Media-rich simulations will guide you through the process of choosing the appropriate PPE for arc flash and non–arc flash labeled equipment from a virtual wardrobe with insights into the rationale dictating the correct decisions as referenced in the standard.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Identify shock and arc flash hazard PPE requirements
    • Examine shock and arc flash hazard PPE for usability
    • Determine the appropriate NFPA 70E PPE table to use
    • Select a complete PPE system based on the equipment and task provided

    Hazard Recognition for Special Equipment

Special scenarios involving equipment and the electrical distribution system may result in an increased level of hazards. This module will help you identify those special hazards and show you how to deal with them safely. New for 2021 - Capacitors.

    Learning Objectives

    • Identify the presence of unique electrical energy hazards
    • Adapt electrical safety requirements based on special equipment hazards for:
    • Electrolytic cell lines
    • Batteries and battery rooms
    • Lasers
    • Power electronic equipment
    • Research and development laboratories
    • Capacitors
  • Equipment Maintenance | Putting it All Together

    Equipment Maintenance

This module focuses on identifying common maintenance practices for electrical equipment safety. Follow along through various scenarios confirming maintenance best practices and requirements with examples of manufacturer's instructions.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Compare the scope of maintenance between NFPA 70E and NFPA 70B
    • Identify the fundamentals of an electrical preventive maintenance program
    • Identify electrical equipment and system maintenance requirements of NFPA 70E
    • Distinguish the maintenance requirements of electrical equipment versus PPE

    Putting It All Together

Run through multiple, interactive scenarios where you practice jobs in succession to reflect learning from the entire series. The final narrative will include exercises in realistic environments and simulations encountered in preceding modules, as well as tasks with three special accompanying videos to illustrate appropriate procedures based on the standards and codes.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Identify hazards associated with the task, equipment, and environment
    • Perform a shock and arc flash risk assessment
    • Select appropriate PPE
    • Establish an electrically safe work condition
