  • Description

Be prepared for the challenges of working with and mitigating hazards related to state-of-the-art energy generation and storage with the all-new NFPA® Photovoltaic and Energy Storage Systems Online Training Series.

From government initiatives to health care facilities, office buildings, big box stores, and residences, the world is progressively moving toward the use of green and renewable energy such as photovoltaic (PV) systems and energy storage systems (ESS). With the rapid evolution and proliferation of these emerging technologies comes the exponential increase in the frequency and potential impact of emergency incidents.

Photovoltaic and Energy Storage Systems Online Training Series is designed to help empower more competent professionals working with PV and ESS to minimize the risks of fire, electrical, and life safety related casualty and property damage arising from these installations. This newly introduced four-part program covers comprehensive design, installation, maintenance, and inspection requirements as specified by leading fire, electrical, and life safety codes and standards, including but not limited to:

    • NFPA 70®, National Electrical Code® (NEC®)
    • NFPA 70E®, Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace®
    • NFPA 70B, Recommended Practice for Electrical Equipment Maintenance
    • NFPA 1, Fire Code
    • NFPA 855, Standard for the Installation of Stationary Energy Storage Systems
    • NFPA 5000®, Building Construction and Safety Code®

NFPA Online Learning offers the flexibility to train on your terms while helping to put you at the forefront of working with photovoltaic and energy storage systems.

This online training series is comprised of four 1-hour courses, one basic and one advanced for PV and ESS, respectively, offering insights into the most current information on PV and ESS systems. A basic course for each centers on how members of a defined team work together to both decrease the likelihood of incidents and reduce the impact of incidents when they do occur. The program emphasizes how code-based decision making positively impacts the different members of the team. The following advanced courses focus on the specific codes and resources that apply to PV and ESS safety, including best practices for locating provisions and specific examples of the most relevant information applicable to design and installation.

The four courses are available for purchase individually and work together as a comprehensive learning series ideal for:

    • Contractors focused on increasing their capabilities in working with and installing PV and ESS
    • Facility managers needing to improve their knowledge of the responsibilities and hazards of housing these advanced systems
    • Manufacturers looking to provide a tool for the authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs) to use so that they better understand these technologies and the installation requirements that need to be enforced
    • Anyone who plays a role in helping to ensure proper functioning PV and ESS and mitigating the dangers of these systems

Take advantage of self-paced web-based training from the source that publishes the codes and standards.

Developed by NFPA subject matter experts, the all-digital series features interactive, scenario-based exercises throughout to increase learning and retention. You will be challenged to apply lesson content in practical ways and pass assessments to measure your understanding of the material.

Complete all four courses to earn:

    • Your Bronze Badge by completing the Energy Storage and Photovoltaic Power Fundamentals Online Training Series, which you can display to demonstrate your accomplishment and proficiency.

  • Energy Storage Systems Basics

Energy Storage Systems Basics Online Training

In the Energy Systems Basics Online Training, you will receive an overview of the fundamental concerns for safer and more efficient operation and the primary hazards related to energy storage systems. The learning scenario takes you on-site at a small commercial building where an ESS was recently installed in the basement. On the job, you will meet four characters involved in the various stages of implementation: an engineer working on the design of the ESS, a contractor installing the ESS, a member of the facilities team tasked with maintaining the ESS, and an AHJ who needs to inspect the ESS during installation.

In the training, you will be presented with multiple scenarios that could contribute to loss of life, property damage, and first responder response, and hear how each member of the team describes how their particular action or inaction led to the situation. The course will be focused on the scenarios, but throughout, the characters will explain the basics of ESS technology and how they benefit the people who own and use the building.

Upon completion, learners should be able to:

    • Define the basic responsibilities of designers, installers, facility managers, and AHJs that specifically relate to ESS
    • Describe the operation of relevant technologies used in ESS
    • Recognize common safety concerns of ESS
  • Going Further With Energy Storage Systems

Going Further With Energy Storage Systems Online Training

Get an in-depth look at how to utilize recognized safety criteria to reduce the risks of fire, explosion, the release of toxins, and other dangers associated with ESS in Going Further with Energy Storage Systems Online Training. In this course, students will be instructed on how to apply the relevant requirements to a residential, commercial, and utility ESS installation.

This training takes you on the job with a licensed electrician working as a teacher and consultant, and an electrical engineer who designs ESS. Along the way, you will be placed in a variety of scenarios involving the design and installation of the new system. The course spotlights the roles of the engineer and contractor to demonstrate how to navigate the relevant codes and identify the appropriate material successfully.

Upon completion, learners should be able to:

    • Utilize/apply pertinent code requirements to mitigate life safety and property hazards in the design, installation, inspection, and maintenance of ESS
    • Effectively navigate those codes and standards to find relevant information
  • Photovoltaic Systems Basics

    Photovoltaic System Basics Online Training

Receive an introduction in Photovoltaic Basics that underscores the essential roles of PV system designers, installers, facility managers, and inspectors. Photovoltaic Systems Basics Online Training focuses on the operation and use of rapidly emerging PV technologies and the most pressing concerns for safety in different types of occupancies and facilities. Learning takes place through the scenario of a company that owns and operates a small commercial building that recently installed a PV system to supplement their power needs. You will follow four characters participating in each stage of the implementation process—the engineer responsible for the system's design, the installing contractor, an on-site maintenance professional, and an AHJ who will need to conduct scheduled inspections.

In the course, participants work through an emergency scenario that could lead to property damage, injury, and loss of life and require the response of emergency personnel. Throughout the course, the characters will explain the operation and hazards of PV technology. You’ll see firsthand how their actions led to the incident in the emergency scenario, and they’ll show you how their work contributes to system and facility safety.
