    NFPA 900, Building Energy Code brings energy conservation into focus for facility managers and code officials.

    The 2016 NFPA 900 is an ANSI-accredited code that addresses energy efficiency and energy conservation in all types of buildings, structures, and equipment. For example, it gives facility managers and code officials reliable guidance for evaluating the energy efficiency of:

    • Forced air heating, cooling, and ventilation systems
    • Exterior wall and roof insulating levels
    • Mechanical equipment such as air handlers and water heaters
    • Electrical equipment such as lighting and motors

    NFPA 900, Building Energy Code references the technical provisions of ASHRAE 90.1, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, and ASHRAE 90.2, Energy Efficient Design of Low-Rise Residential Buildings, with the administrative provisions and appropriate annexes, table of contents, definitions, references, index, and other information developed through the NFPA® process that create a usable and adoptable energy code.

    Together they include the minimum energy-efficient requirements for:

    • The design, construction, reconstruction, alteration, repair, demolition, removal, inspection, issuance and revocation of permits or licenses, and installation of equipment related to energy conservation in all buildings and structures and parts thereof
    • The rehabilitation and maintenance of construction related to energy efficiency in existing buildings
    • The standards or requirements for materials to be used
