  • Description

Help to reduce risks of fire and explosions in facilities handling radioactive materials with NFPA 801.

The public, facility personnel, and the environment are inherently vulnerable to hazards relating to radioactive materials. NFPA 801, Standard for Fire Protection for Facilities Handling Radioactive Materials, 2020 edition, gets you up to date with the most current safety requirements and guidance for the design, construction, operation, and regulation of facilities handling radioactive materials, excluding nuclear reactors covered by NFPA 804, NFPA 805, and NFPA 806.

The standard offers fire protection criteria for mitigating personal dangers, safeguarding property, and minimizing process interruption resulting from fire and explosion.

Keep your facility and your community safer by getting up to date with the latest requirements.

The 2020 edition was revised to reflect the most current industry practices and technologies. A variety of changes help to identify when a fire hazard analysis can justify exceptions to protection elements. Also added are a description of, and the provisions for, a qualified fire protection engineer under whose supervision a fire hazards analysis is prepared.

Be ready for the modern challenges of keeping your facility safer and compliant by accessing NFPA 801, Standard for Fire Protection for Facilities Handling Radioactive Materials, 2020 edition. Place your order today.

    2014 Edition

Update to the 2014 NFPA 801 so you're prepared to apply the latest industry safeguards to protect people, property, and work-in-progress.

Wherever radioactive materials are handled, processed, or stored, special safety measures are needed to reduce the risk of fire or explosion and the severity of contamination from a fire or explosion. NFPA 801, Standard for Fire Protection for Facilities Handling Radioactive Materials applies to all facilities that handle radioactive materials except nuclear reactors. It provides requirements and guidance on design, construction, operation, and regulation.

The most important 2014 change involves additional rules for the development of written plans for these facilities, such as:

    • Requirements to update fire hazard analyses (FHA) for the facility on a periodic basis to ensure the analysis remains current
    • Additional details of how and by whom FHAs must be performed
    • Additional detail on requirements for Management Policies and Fire Protection Plans
    • Clarification of the roles and responsibilities of Facility Fire Emergency Organizations

In addition to the above, the 2014 NFPA 801 includes a completely rewritten Chapter 7, Special Hazards in Nuclear Facilities. (Softbound, 31 pp., 2014)
