    It is critical that personnel with concerns for fire detection, signaling, and emergency communications have the knowledge to help improve the likelihood of escaping and minimizing damages and loss in the event of a structure fire. NFPA 72®, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code® Live Virtual Training (LVT) offers comprehensive, expert instruction in vital safety and performance requirements for these life-saving systems.

    The five-day, 20-hour program covers how the role of traditional fire alarm systems continues to evolve and strategies for accurately and efficiently locating, interpreting, and applying NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code, criteria.

    This web-based learning series developed by the organization that publishes the code is a must-have for system designers, installers, contractors, project managers, authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ), and others who play a role in fire alarm systems readiness. The interactive live virtual format makes it possible to access top-quality, NFPA instructor-led training on your laptop or computer.

    You will have the opportunity to further your knowledge of primary concepts of NFPA 72, 2022 edition, through scenario-based exercises and engaging activities while earning 2.0 valuable continuing education units. Courses are scheduled over five consecutive days alternating between morning and afternoon start times each month, so you can choose the program that best fits your schedule.

    Upon completion, you should be able to:

    • Identify the appropriate initiating device for a given scenario and design an appropriate fire detection system for a given scenario
    • Design a notification system for a given scenario, including determining how loud a fire alarm audible notification must be and determining the size and location of visual notification appliances
    • List the options for secondary power supplies
    • Plan the zoning and annunciation of an alarm system
    • Perform a battery calculation
    • List key requirements for primary power and the protection of primary power
    • State the purpose of a loop resistance calculation
    • State the purpose of a voltage drop calculation
    • Name the two principal types of fire alarm circuits that affect wiring requirements
    • List the interface requirements for elevator recall
    • List the interface requirements for elevator power shutdown
    • Plan when and where smoke detectors or heat detectors might be required for different elevator scenarios
    • Plan emergency control functions for a given scenario
    • Identify the different types of supervision station alarm systems and how they are commonly used
    • List at least three reasons for off-premises signaling
    • Identify the key requirements for properly connecting a digital alarm communicator transmitter
    • Identify the key requirements for properly connecting an IP communicator
    • Develop a record-keeping program in accordance with code requirements while on the job
    • Locate forms and subforms in the code

    Certificate of Completion:
    To demonstrate your proficiency, go online to take the course assessment. Once you successfully complete the assessment and course evaluation, you can download and print your Certificate of Completion.

    Continuing Education Credit:
    Earn 20 hours or 2.0 Continuing Education Units.
    Attendance is required to earn CEUs. Please verify applicability with your professional board or organization before attending.

  • Live Virtual Training Terms & Specifications

    Course Tuition: The course tuition is due and payable before starting class.

    Expiration: Participants will need to attend the training at the scheduled time of the class. The class will not be recorded. Participants will have access to the post-training assessment and course evaluation for 60 days.

    CEUs: You earn 0.1 continuing education unit (CEU) for each learning hour. To verify total numbers of CEUs for a course, please check the description tab. Upon successful completion of a course, participants will be able to download the CEUs certificate directly from the NFPA® Learning Portal. Please verify applicability with your professional board or organization.

    Specifications:

    Confirmation – You will receive a registration confirmation. Check it for accuracy!

    To access the training, go to My Profile, then to My Training, and then click on the link to the NFPA Training Portal.

    • Course materials will be available on the portal prior to the beginning of the training. It is recommended that you download and print the material before the start of the class.
    • Information on how to access the live event will be posted to the NFPA portal in the Information document, along with other information to help you prepare for the training.
    • On the day of training we recommend that you log in 15 minutes prior to the start of the session.
    • For optimal Live online course performance, please use Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, or IE® as your web browser.
    • Refunds
      To receive a full refund for live virtual training, NFPA must receive written notification of your desire to cancel your registration via fax, mail, or email at least 7 business days prior to the start of the program. If notification is received fewer than 7 business days prior to the start of the program, you may transfer your registration to a program of equal or lesser value with availability or you may transfer your registration to another person; however, no refund will be made. If no notice is received, your registration fee will be forfeited. Multiple requests to transfer the same original registration may be subject to a 20% service fee.
    • Cancellation policy
      To receive a full refund if you cancel your registration, you must notify us in writing via fax, mail, or email at least 7 business days prior to the start of the training. The fax number and mailing address are located in the top right corner of this page. Or, submit your request online. If notification is received fewer than 7 business days in advance, you may transfer to a training of equal or lesser value or transfer your registration to another person. If no notice is received, your registration fee will be forfeited.
