  • Residential

    Understanding the revisions between editions of the National Electrical Code and how they affect you is critical in helping to perform code-compliant installations when the 2020 edition becomes enforced in your area. This module focuses on the changes that have an impact on the contractor working in residential occupancies, including the following areas: kitchen, bathroom, garage, basement, bedroom, living room, as well as installations outside of the home.

    Upon completion, participants should be able to:

    • State new locations that require ground-fault protection on receptacles
    • Size service or feeder conductors that supply entire loads of a dwelling unit using 310.12
    • Identify spaces subject to requirements for habitable rooms more consistently
  • Commercial/Institutional

    Review the changes to the NEC that are relevant to contractors working in commercial and institutional settings such as office buildings, healthcare facilities, retail establishments, and many others. This module covers changes to ground-fault protection, wiring, receptacles, grounding, EES requirements, EES branches, and more.

    Upon completion, participants should be able to:

    • Identify areas considered to be food preparation areas that require installation of GFCI receptacles

  • Special Occupancies

    This module is designed to help get you up-to-speed with the latest requirements for special occupancies such as relocatable structures, manufactured homes, and agricultural buildings. Other special occupancies covered include hazardous locations, RVs and RV parks, marinas, boatyards, floating buildings, and commercial and noncommercial docking facilities. You will engage in interactive exercises to learn how changes affect working with switches and switchboards, motors, heating and cooling systems, equipment over 1000 volts, luminaires and lighting, system and equipment grounding, service calculations, busways, raceways, and more.

    Upon completion, participants should be able to:

    • Locate and use provisions on electrical applications to floating buildings,
    • Identify new locations on recreational vehicles that require GFCI receptacles,
    • State new requirements for multiple feeders and branch circuits on buildings
  • Industrial

    Receive an overview of changes impacting contractors that perform industrial installations to help ensure compliance with the NEC, 2020 edition. Content in this module covers changes to general provisions as well as those to Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 locations; Zone 0, 1 and 2, 20, 21, and 22 locations; services and cable; hazardous locations; commercial garages; and aircraft hangars.

    Upon completion, participants should be able to:

    • Identify new and revised wiring types permitted in Class 1, 2, and 3 locations
    • State new and revised requirements for Zone 0, 1, 2, 20, 21, and 22 locations
  • Electric Vehicles

    Work through real-world scenarios to identify and understand how code changes affect electric vehicle charging installations. Changes in the new NEC relevant to electric vehicles covered in this module include the type of equipment referenced in the definition for ESVE, interrupting device requirements for personnel protection systems, EV charging equipment requiring overcurrent protection, and more.

    Upon completion, participants should be able to:

    • Identify where GFCI protection is required on EV charging receptacles
    • Discuss provisions for providing power to EV charging stations and for their installation
  • Global

    The National Electrical Code is referenced to help establish electrically safe working and living environments throughout the United States and around the world. This module focuses on the changes that impact everyone who works with the NEC. You will learn about changes affecting general provisions, wiring, and equipment and be able to confirm your understanding of the impacts of changes and the ability to apply them by completing the interactive components of this module.

    Upon completion, participants should be able to:

    • Discuss new provisions associated with the grounding and bonding of all types of conductors
    • Define the term laundry area and locate provisions for these types of areas
    • Use Article 310 and its reorganized tables to select and use appropriate conductors
  • Alternative Energy Technologies

    Compare changes made to the code in 2020 relating to alternative energy technologies. This module covers revised NEC requirements for PV, wind turbines, and other alternative energy installations. You will work through realistic scenarios and apply code changes to everything from connections, power sources, source connections, and wiring methods to disconnects and overcurrent protection, EV power equipment, stand-alone systems, and critical operations power systems.

    Upon completion, participants should be able to:

    • State requirements for the installation of ac receptacles on electrical vehicles
    • Discuss provisions for the interconnection of power production source(s) to supply systems
  • Special Equipment and Conditions

    The changes covered in this module affect special conditions and equipment. Interactive exercises will help you get up to date with parts of the code pertaining to special equipment such as swimming pool lighting and circuits, fire pumps, overcurrent protection, and wiring of elevators. Special conditions covered here may include transfer equipment, circuits and power, and emergency circuits.

    Upon completion, participants should be able to:

    • Discuss new requirements for the expansion of GFCI requirements on swimming pool pump motors and in pool equipment rooms
    • Discuss new provisions associated with illumination sources
  • Limited Energy and Communication

    Understand the revisions to the 2020 edition of the NEC related to limited energy and communications. This module presents changes to installation requirements for Class 1, 2, and 3 circuits, communications circuits, and broadband communications systems and circuits in general. Additional areas of focus in limited energy and communications include optical fiber cables, television and radio, broadband communications systems specifics, and fire alarm systems.

    Upon completion, participants should be able to:

    • Locate provisions for common requirements for communications systems.
    • Discuss general provisions for overhead communications cables and runs between buildings.
  • Worker Safety

    This 10-part learning series concludes with a video presentation by Jeff Sargent, one of the NFPA® editors of the NEC Handbook, as he discusses the major changes to worker safety in the 2020 edition. Jeff provides in-depth coverage of changes to emergency shutoffs, working space, and many other critical, new or revised requirements in this Worker Safety module.
