  • Description

Explore prevention and mitigation strategies for flash-fire and explosion hazards as well as methods for maintaining a safer work environment with expert instruction on combustible dust hazards awareness, evaluation, and controls.

Combustible dust can be found in many industrial settings and comes in different forms, resulting in the potential of fire, flash fire, and explosion hazards. It's vital manufacturers at risk take appropriate measures, including completing a required dust hazards analysis (DHA) to help ensure the safety of its employees and to better protect property and valuable assets.

The NFPA 652 Combustible Dust (2019) Online Training Series is an in-depth, three-part series covering everything from basic worker safety awareness to help prevent these types of incidents to the safeguards that are commonly put in place. Based on the latest NFPA 652, Standard on the Fundamentals of Combustible Dust, 2019 edition criteria, the program is a must-have for manufacturing operations working in mining, power generation, wood and wood products, automotive and metalworking, agriculture and food products, and any other operation that needs to comply with the standard.

NFPA 652 Combustible Dust Online Training provides the flexibility to choose the courses that you require and to work at your pace and convenience.

This NFPA® Online Training Series is comprised of three courses that can be purchased individually or as a bundle at a substantial discount. In each course, participants are immersed in realistic scenarios of working in a grain mill. You will learn how to identify possible hazards by exploring different environments and following along on performing a DHA.

Innovative NFPA online training courses feature engaging videos, interactive exercises and simulations, informative case studies, and other features that enhance learning and retention. A training advisory group of industry experts was enlisted to lend their specialized knowledge and input and to guide the development of the most relevant learning objectives. Finish the training and score 70% or higher on a final assessment to earn 0.1 continuing education units for each individual course hour.

    The series includes:

    • Course 1: Combustible Dust Safety Awareness — provides a basic overview of personal, peer, and facility safety and how to be more aware of surroundings to prevent catastrophic incidents
    • Course 2: Combustible Dust Hazards Evaluation — expands your understanding of important considerations when performing a DHA, who the qualified person is, and how to achieve compliance and remove barriers to improving safety in these environments
    • Course 3: Combustible Dust Controls and Safeguards — offers insight on the way that dust handling or processing systems are designed for safety, how controls are implemented, and how management systems enforced.

Give your team the training to improve safety and gain a thorough understanding and appreciation of the hazard evaluation process and controls to prevent and mitigate fire and explosion risks related to combustible dusts.

NFPA 652 mandates the completion of a DHA analysis for new and existing processes and facility compartments in industries where combustible dust may be present. The standard also requires the DHA to be reviewed and updated every five years. Make sure you are current with the latest information and in compliance with the standard by completing each course of the NFPA 652 Combustible Dust (2019) Online Training Series.*

*This training does not qualify a participant to conduct a DHA as specialized requirements may be needed.

  • Combustible Dust Safety Awareness

Ideal for new engineers, plant process workers and operators, enforcers, and any worker who needs to have an awareness of dust hazards, the Combustible Dust Safety Awareness Online Training course offers an introduction to the world of combustible dusts and their hazards. You will play the role of an onboarding milling operator who needs to be aware of possible hazards by looking at the environment and learning through exploration.

This one-hour course starts with a focus on why it is important to be aware of dangers and imparts an understanding of the magnitude that combustible dusts can have on various industries. The program then moves into a high-level overview of what combustible dusts are and how fires, flash fires, and explosions can occur in these environments. The training concludes with a call to action on how operators and operations supervisors should act when encountering hazards and the steps to preventing additional unnecessary risks.

Upon completion, you should be able to:

    • Recognize safety concerns of operations that handle or process combustible dust
    • Identify common control measures taken to prevent and mitigate fires due to combustible dust
  • Combustible Dust Hazards Evaluation

Course 2, Combustible Dust Hazards Evaluation Online Training, begins the process of looking at a DHA as defined by NFPA 652 through scenario-based learning, videos, expert interviews, and job aids to use in your work. Experience intuitive online training that breaks down the dust hazards analysis (DHA) — "why" conduct one, "when" to do so, and "who" conducts the analysis. The learner will follow the DHA team in conducting a dust hazards analysis of the grain mill. Designed for experienced engineers, fire prevention professionals, owners, inspectors, facility managers, and plant/process/safety and risk managers. The learner gets an introduction to what necessitates a DHA and some of the pre-work that goes into its creation such as who should complete it, when it should be done, and a high-level look at the process involved.

The course then reviews considerations that must be made when identifying hazards, including some of the hazards themselves, such as properties of dust and environmental factors. The training concludes by looking at various tools that can be used in the analysis of combustible dust hazards and how these methods are typically used when DHAs are completed. This module will not teach the learner how to complete a DHA; but rather, it will help the learner think through the numerous considerations that must be given when a DHA is performed.

Upon completion, you should be able to:

    • Describe elements of a DHA and the process of its creation
    • Identify potential dust hazards within these types of environments
    • Summarize methods used to evaluate and assess risk
  • Combustible Dust Controls and Safeguards

The third and final course in this online training series, Combustible Dust Controls and Safeguards, provides experienced engineers, HSE leaders, fire professionals, plant process and risk managers, owners, and inspectors with an understanding of how controls and implementations recommended by a completed dust hazards analysis (DHA) are put into action. After covering considerations that are made in the development of a DHA, the Controls and Systems for Combustible Dust Hazards module spotlights the safeguards in place to mitigate, contain, and control dust hazards.

In this course, the learner is following the on-site subject matter expert in implementing controls and safeguards recommended in the completed DHA. The exercise begins by looking at prevention methods in the environment, particularly in building construction, and continues through mitigating damage from dust hazards through the design of equipment. The training concludes by reviewing the management systems used in cleaning and preventing dust hazards.

Upon completion, you should be able to:

    • Recognize how processes are designed to remove or reduce hazards at their source
    • Identify common control methods that are used to better prevent and mitigate combustible dust hazards
    • Explain how appropriate management systems help ensure safe combustible dust handling and operations
