Make sure aircraft rescue and fire-fighting (ARFF) vehicles comply with NFPA 414, 2020 edition, for a safer and more effective response to airport and aircraft emergencies.

In the event of a fire on an aircraft, it's critical ARFF vehicles are safe and capable of meeting prescribed response time standards to rescue occupants and conduct rescue and fire-fighting operations. NFPA 414, Standard for Aircraft Rescue and Fire-Fighting Vehicles, is a vital resource for verifying on-pavement and off-pavement vehicles intended to carry rescue and fire-fighting personnel and equipment to the scene of an aircraft emergency are fully operational.

An essential for airport managers, response personnel, purchasers, and AHJs, the standard offers the most current information on the design, performance, and acceptance criteria for aircraft rescue and fire-fighting (ARFF) vehicles. NFPA 414 covers single and multiple operators and is consistent with other source documents and accepted industry practices relating to ARFF operations.

Be prepared for the latest hazards and challenges of aircraft rescue and response.

NFPA 414, Standard for Aircraft Rescue and Fire-Fighting Vehicles, is significantly revised to reflect the most current developments in aircraft equipment, technology, practices, and procedures.

Changes to the 2020 edition include:

    • New requirements for forward-looking infrared cameras mounted on ARFF vehicles

Protect airline passengers and emergency responders. Reference the latest NFPA 414 to verify that aircraft rescue and fire-fighting (ARFF) vehicles are in compliance.

The 2017 edition of NFPA 414, Standard for Aircraft Rescue and Fire-Fighting Vehicles specifies the most up-to-date design, performance, and acceptance criteria for aircraft rescue and fire-fighting (ARFF) vehicles intended to carry personnel and equipment to the scene of an aircraft emergency to rescue occupants and conduct rescue and fire fighting operations.

Over time, the Standard has been revised to reflect airline industry changes -- including the development and use of larger aircraft manufactured of new composite materials. Also, many ARFF vehicles are now operated by one individual, with devices and warnings/alarms designed for the single user/operator in mind. Compliance with the latest NFPA 414 helps airport managers, response personnel, purchasers, and AHJs ensure that vehicles are safe and able to meet prescribed response time standards.

Important changes in the 2017 edition:

    • Updates to referenced publications and definitions
    • Rewritten Chapter 5, Aircraft Interior Access Vehicles including the addition of language to address cab visibility, cab construction, equipment, AIAV body, docking platform, acceptance criteria, and testing
    • NFPA 1901, Standard for Automotive Fire Apparatus on SCBA mounting and an extract of NFPA 1901 language for sub section 6.3.6.3 Electrical System Performance Tests in Chapter 6, Acceptance Criteria

The Standard is consistent with other source documents as well as commonly accepted practices as they relate to the ARFF industry. (Softbound, 100 pp., 2017)
