    • Material directing users to NFPA 14, Standard for the Installation of Standpipe and Hose Systems, for requirements relating to standpipes and hose systems for marine terminals
    • A new requirement that fire protection water supplies be inspected, tested, and maintained in accordance with NFPA 25, Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems, to help ensure water supply systems are operational when needed in the event of a fire or other emergencies
    • Provisions that a fire risk assessment be performed in the design phase of construction to account for marine terminal structures having specific fire safety challenges, along with a list of resources to facilitate the assessment process

    The 2016 edition of NFPA 307, Standard for the Construction and Fire Protection of Marine Terminals, Piers, and Wharves provides the latest principles for construction and fire protection in these types of structures. Compliance is essential for the protection from loss of life and property -- especially since special use piers and wharf structures that differ in design and construction from cargo handling piers require special considerations based on the type and function of the structure. The Standard also applies to buildings and structures located on marine terminal premises and the terminal yard areas.

    NFPA 307 covers the basic pier substructure constructive types and any combination of materials in requirements for:

    Changes in the 2016 NFPA 307 respond to industry needs for greater guidance:

    • A new construction requirement mandates consideration of health and safety aspects for cruise ship passenger terminals
