  • Description

Help eliminate or control fire dangers during construction, alteration, and demolition of buildings with the 2022 edition of NFPA 241, Standard for Safeguarding Construction, Alteration, and Demolition Operations.

Fire potential during construction is inherently high, and NFPA 241, Standard for Safeguarding Construction, Alteration, and Demolition Operations, provides measures to help prevent or minimize fire damage to structures — including underground structures — during such activities.

The 2022 edition of NFPA 241, Standard for Safeguarding Construction, Alteration, and Demolition Operations, reflects a comprehensive review of the document by the committee, which resulted in substantial changes.

New material on a variety of construction, alteration, and demolition topics has been added and the standard’s chapters have been reorganized for easier use. References to other NFPA documents have also been added to account for previously unaddressed structures and their requirements.

The newest edition provides both a reorganization of existing content as well the inclusion of new requirements to help you manage risk and ensure adequate fire protection.

Following a careful review of a number of fire events over the last several years, several revisions have been made to Chapter 4, "General Requirements," such as:

    • New and existing content has been grouped together for ease of use for the reader.
    • Requirements related to the Fire Prevention Program have been significantly revised.
    • The Fire Prevention Program Manager requirements have been updated.

Other chapters in NFPA 241 also saw extensive revision. For example, Chapter 8, "Safeguarding Construction and Alteration Operations," includes new references to NFPA 909, Code for the Protection of Cultural Resource Properties — Museums, Libraries, and Places of Worship, and NFPA 914, Code for the Protection of Historic Structures.

A new chapter, Chapter 13, "Safeguarding Construction Operations for Large Wood Structures," has been added with requirements for large wood-frame structures, which were not covered in previous editions of NFPA 241, Standard for Safeguarding Construction, Alteration, and Demolition Operations.

Utilize the requirements and guidance from the 2022 edition to help protect buildings during construction, alteration, and demolition.

Construction contractors, demolition contractors, insurance professionals, risk managers, fire service professionals, building owners, and building engineers can reference NFPA 241, Standard for Safeguarding Construction, Alteration, and Demolition Operations, to help avoid fire dangers on the job. 2019 Edition

Help eliminate or control fire dangers during construction, alteration, and demolition of buildings with NFPA 241.

Fire potential during construction is inherently high, and NFPA 241, Standard for Safeguarding Construction, Alteration, and Demolition Operations provides measures for preventing or minimizing fire damage to structures, including those in underground locations, during such activities.

The 2019 edition of NFPA 241 includes new requirements with important clarifications to help you manage risk and ensure adequate fire protection.

    • Temporary heating equipment and cooking equipment continue near the top of the list for ignition sources in the construction environment. New provisions reinforce the need to secure such equipment to prevent displacement.
    • A new requirement helps ensure that electrical service disconnecting means are readily accessible and clearly labeled.
    • A new reference to NFPA 56 addresses cleaning and purging of fuel gas piping during both the installation and removal process of such systems.
    • The requirement for guard services is now specifically mandated for a building using combustible construction that is more than 40 feet above grade.
    • A new section in Chapter 11 deals with standpipe installation in tunnels under construction.
    • A new chapter focuses on tall timber structures and the importance of a Fire Exposure Analysis.
    • An added section allows the AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) to implement portions of the standard as appropriate.

Construction or demolition contractors, insurance professionals, risk managers, fire service professionals, building owners, and building engineers reference NFPA 241 to avoid fire dangers on the job. (Print, 32 pp., 2019)

    2013 Edition

Eliminate or control fire dangers during construction, alteration, and demolition of buildings with the 2013 edition of NFPA 241.

Fire potential during construction, alteration, or demolition operations is inherently high, and NFPA 241, Standard for Safeguarding Construction, Alteration, and Demolition Operations provides measures for preventing or minimizing fire damage to structures, including those in underground locations, during such activities.

Ensure adequate fire protection with these important changes:

    • Temporary heating devices must be installed per manufacturer specifications and, if electrical, the devices must be equipped with tip-over protection and overheat cut-offs.
    • Lower, completed floors can be occupied while upper floor construction continues if both:
      • Sprinklers are completed and tested for the occupied, lower floors
      • Separate systems are provided on upper floors so as not to impact systems on lower floors

Construction or demolition contractors, insurance professionals, risk managers, fire service professionals, building owners, and building engineers reference NFPA 241 to avoid fire dangers on the job. (Softbound, 22 pp., 2013)
