  • Description

Mitigate occupational hazards and keep fire fighters safe. Choose PPE that complies with the updated edition of NFPA 1971.

For fire fighters, facing danger every day is part of the job. Safeguard lives on the fireground with NFPA 1971: Standard on Protective Ensembles for Structural Fire Fighting and Proximity Fire Fighting. This critical document establishes minimum levels of protection from thermal, physical, environmental, and bloodborne pathogen hazards encountered during structural and proximity fire fighting operations.

NFPA 1971 applies to design, performance, testing, and certification for structural and proximity fire fighting ensembles and ensemble elements that include coats, trousers, coveralls, helmets, gloves, footwear, and interface components. For the 2018 edition, optional provisions for limited protection from specified chemicals, biological agents, and radiological particulates (CBRN) terrorism agents have been removed from the Standard, and are now in NFPA 1994: Standard on Protective Ensembles for First Responders to CBRN Terrorism Incidents.

Other content changes in this edition expand your ability to provide better protection to fire fighters.

    • A new definition covers protective barrier hood -- the optional interface element of the protective ensemble that provides limited thermal, physical, and barrier protection to the coat/helmet/SCBA facepiece interface area. The Particulate Filtration Efficiency Test and Total Heat Loss Test are required for the new optional interface element.
    • A new glove sizing system is an evenly graded system that readily lends itself to the use of a Brannock-style measuring device for estimating correct sizing (similar to the sizing system for footwear).

Make sure first responders are equipped for safety and success on the job. (Print, 198 pp., 2018)

  • How the NFPA Handbooks Differ from Codes and Standards

THE NFPA HANDBOOKS DIFFER FROM CODES AND STANDARDS

Ever wonder what the difference is between an NFPA® handbook and a code or standard? We’re glad you asked.

NFPA codes and standards both provide requirements for achieving outcomes. Handbooks take a deeper dive, providing the full text of a code or standard as well as expert commentary and features such as graphics, decision trees, testing procedures, case studies, sample forms and checklists, and other helpful aids to give a better understanding of the reasoning behind the requirements and how to apply them.

    JUST REMEMBER:

    • A code or standard is a framework—a set of rules to follow with a goal to achieve a certain result
    • A handbook is a connector—linking requirements to application by helping you understand the reasoning behind a code or standard

The simplest way to think about it is that codes and standards list the technical requirements while handbooks explain those requirements to clarify how to apply them.

    2013 Edition

Mitigate occupational hazards and keep fire fighters safe. Choose PPE that complies with the 2013 NFPA 1971.

For fire fighters, facing danger every day is part of the job. Safeguard lives and help them work effectively on the fireground with NFPA 1971: Standard on Protective Ensembles for Structural Fire Fighting and Proximity Fire Fighting. This critical document establishes minimum levels of protection from thermal, physical, environmental, and bloodborne pathogen hazards encountered during structural and proximity fire fighting operations. Optional provisions for limited protection from specified chemicals, biological agents, and radiological particulates (CBRN) terrorism agents are also included.

NFPA 1971 applies to design, performance, testing, and certification for structural and proximity fire fighting ensembles and ensemble elements that include coats, trousers, coveralls, helmets, gloves, footwear, and interface components.

Keep pace with major changes in the 2013 edition that improve protection, including:

    • Revised definitions, including facial feature headform, glove body, gusset, harness, tongue and several other terms
    • Revised performance requirements in Chapter 7, including those for the Man-in-Simulant (MIST) test and the chemical permeation resistance test
    • New test methods in Chapter 8 -- water immersion compressive heat resistance (WICHR); whole glove thermal protection performance; transmitted and stored energy; glove hand function; torque; and disintegration resistance.

The Standard also contains editorial revisions that improve usability. Make sure first responders are equipped for safety and success on the job. (Softbound, 145 pp., 2013)
