  • Description

Help firefighters stay fit with the 2022 edition of NFPA 1583, Standard on Health-Related Fitness Programs for Fire Department Members.

Firefighter fitness affects every aspect of the job, from effectiveness in the field to long-term stress and injury resilience. This is why a fitness program—with properly trained peer fitness trainers and health and fitness coordinators—is a key component of any fire department's occupational safety and health program. The updated edition of NFPA 1583, Standard on Health-Related Fitness Programs for Fire Department Members, outlines a health-related fitness program that is designed for fire departments and is consistent with today's best practices.

The first edition of NFPA 1500, Standard on Fire Department Occupational Safety and Health Program, contained language that required the fire departments to develop a physical fitness program for its personnel. Similarly, NFPA 1583, Standard on Health-Related Fitness Programs for Fire Department Members, stays up-to-date with current knowledge and technology to help ensure firefighters stay healthy and fit.

The latest edition of this NFPA safety standard is an important companion to ;NFPA 1582, Standard on Comprehensive Occupational Medical Program for Fire Departments. Recent updates to the 2022 edition of NFPA 1583, Standard on Health-Related Fitness Programs for Fire Department Members, help to keep the standard current with all other NFPA® health and safety standards.

Recent revisions to NFPA 1583, Standard on Health-Related Fitness Programs for Fire Department Members, include the following updates:

    • Content in the updated edition features improved alignment with the Fire Service Joint Labor Management Wellness-Fitness Initiative (WFI).
    • Recent updates and expanded responsibilities for both peer fitness trainers and health and fitness coordinators were added.
    • Program data collection requirements were expanded to better evaluate the effectiveness of the health-related fitness program in this safety standard.

    2015 Edition

Keep fire fighters fit with the 2015 NFPA 1583, Standard on Health-Related Fitness Programs for Fire Department Members.

Fire fighter fitness affects every aspect of the job, from effectiveness in the field to long-term stress and injury resilience. That's why a fitness program -- with properly trained peer fitness trainers and health and fitness coordinators -- is a key component of any department's occupational safety and health program.

NFPA 1583 outlines a complete health-related fitness program designed for fire departments that is consistent with today's best practices. The 2015 edition is a vital companion to NFPA 1582, Comprehensive Occupational Medical Program for Fire Departments.

Important revisions in the 2015 NFPA 1583 keep the Standard current with all other NFPA® health and safety standards.

Annex material helps fire departments provide an adequate facility, rather than a prescriptive list of equipment. Annexes contain a suggestion that the HFC have a background in functional anatomy, exercise physiology, exercise testing and prescription, exercise supervision, and leadership. There's also a self-assessment tool for use by members to monitor their individual fitness level. (Print, 21 pp., 2015)
