This course is a recipient of a 2019 Brandon Hall Group BRONZE Excellence in Learning Award for Best Advance in Custom Content.
This 3-part interactive online training series provides an essential foundation for understanding the design, installation, and analysis of storage fire sprinkler protection based on the 2019 edition of NFPA 13, Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems.
Updated to align with the 2019 edition of NFPA 13, this online training program consists of 3 one-hour modules and introduces students to the basic principles of the application, design, and assessment of automatic sprinkler systems protecting miscellaneous and warehouse storage occupancies. Students will identify storage arrangements and hazard classifications for storage occupancies and select a system type for a given arrangement. They will then apply design requirements for CMDA, CMSA, and ESFR sprinklers for various storage classifications and arrangements. To test their knowledge, students will walk through a virtual warehouse and apply what they've learned to scenarios they encounter on their journey. Throughout the modules an NFPA engineer will provide commentary and highlight changes from the 2016 edition. The students will earn credit for the course after successfully passing an assessment included with each module.
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to:
Module 1
- Define various commodity classifications and storage arrangements and associated terminology used in storage design and analysis
- Select appropriate commodity classifications for various storage arrangements
- Classify mixed-commodity storage, including those with various plastics
- Apply the commodity classification evaluation process and associated design requirements
- Select the system type for a given storage arrangement
Module 2
Apply design requirements for CMDA sprinklers for:
- Palletized, solid-piled, bin box, shelf, or back-to-back shelf storage of Class I through Class IV commodities
- Palletized, solid-piled, bin box, shelf, or back-to-back shelf storage of plastic and rubber commodities
- Rack storage of Class I through Class IV and plastic commodities
- Hose stream allowance and water supply duration
- Standard coverage sprinkler spacing
Module 3
Apply design requirements for CMSA sprinklers for:
- Palletized and solid-piled, storage of Class I through Class IV and plastic commodities
- Open-frame rack storage of Class I through Class IV and plastic commodities
- Hose stream allowance and water supply duration
- Special application coverage sprinkler spacing
Apply design requirements for ESFR sprinklers for:
- Expanded, Expanded Group A
- Plastic motor vehicle components
- Rubber tires
- Roll paper
- High bay records
- Group A plastics in retail
- Sprinkler spacing
