  • Description

Be confident emergency vehicle technicians (EVTs) have the knowledge and skills to help protect people and property by confirming qualifications specified in NFPA 1071.

There are three levels of EVT, and each has its own unique set of emergency vehicle technician skill requirements. NFPA 1071, Standard for Emergency Vehicle Technician Professional Qualifications, identifies and defines minimum job performance requirements (JPRs) for anyone responsible for inspecting, maintaining, repairing, or testing emergency response vehicles.

Originally developed at the request of the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), this publication is essential for confirming EVTs are qualified for their jobs. The standard is also a powerful tool for helping technicians improve capabilities in helping to safeguard the emergency vehicles that the lives and property of the public and company personnel rely upon.

The newly revised NFPA 1071 offers the most relevant information on EVT qualifications.

NFPA 1071 clearly delineates professional requirements based on the three levels of EVT as defined in the most recent version of NFPA 1901, Automotive Fire Apparatus:

    • EVT I: responsible for operational checks
    • EVT II: responsible for performance checks
    • EVT III: responsible for the supervision and managerial skills

For the 2020 edition, all JPRs were reviewed for accuracy and relevance. Additional notable changes include:

    • Incorporation of NFPA 1911, Standard for the Inspection, Maintenance, Testing, and Retirement of In-Service Emergency Vehicles, requirements for professional qualifications as applicable for each position
    • Revision of Annex D to include the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation’s “16 Firefighter Life Safety Initiatives”

Make sure technicians are qualified to keep emergency response vehicles in optimal condition.

Protect the public and company personnel. Be confident emergency vehicle technicians (EVTs) are qualified to meet NFPA 1071 requirements for inspection, maintenance, repair, and testing.

Originally developed at the request of the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), the 2016 NFPA 1071, Standard for Emergency Vehicle Technician Professional Qualifications identifies and defines the minimum job performance requirements (JPRs) for Emergency Vehicle Technicians (EVTs). Requirements apply to anyone engaged in the inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, repair, and testing of emergency response vehicles.

NFPA 1071 clearly delineates requirements based on the three levels of EVT:

    • EVT I responsible for operational checks
    • EVT II responsible for performance checks
    • EVT III responsible for supervision and managerial skills

Improve preparedness -- train personnel using the 2016 NFPA 1071.

The skills and knowledge requirements contained in each level of EVT are current with the 2016 NFPA 1901, Automotive Fire Apparatus, and there's a skills maintenance requirement for each of the three levels. (Softbound, 34 pp., 2016)
