  • Description

The interactions between human behavior and fire are complex. The Human Behavior in Fire Emergencies Online Training presents information regarding the underlying aspects of how human behavior impacts building design. Participants receive a review of human behavior from the starting point of when occupants first become aware of a potential danger to the vast array of decisions to be made in response to a threat.

A Certified Fire Protection Specialist® (CFPS®) must also be familiar with the impact of smoke on the ability to escape fire and how evacuation time differs for persons with disabilities or mobility impairments. The module underscores how these impacts, coupled with a general understanding of typical human behavior, inform the fundamental concepts of appropriate egress design. These best practices rely on the simple formula ASET>RSET, as well as additional calculation methods for egress prediction.

Special features in the Human Behavior in Fire Emergencies Online Training include an exclusive video Q&A on the Bradford stadium fire, an incident used for research on human behavior and fire worldwide. Additional assets include an investigative report on the Bradford stadium fire, 3D image examples depicting appropriate building evacuation modeling, a downloadable PDF paper on the misconception of panic in fires, and a media video warehouse fire report.

At the end of the course, you should be able to:

    • Recall primary topics located in Section 4 of the Fire Protection Handbook® (FPH).
    • Use data to show the relationship between human behavior and code requirements.
    • Assess which occupant characteristics must be considered for building design to result in safe evacuation.
    • Identify types of evacuation models
