Understand the Risks. Reduce the Danger.
Innovative NFPA online training in hazardous materials safety.
Best-in-class NFPA online training in the fundamentals of hazardous materials (hazmat) safety.
While a high-profile event such as the 2020 ammonium nitrate explosion in Beirut, Lebanon demonstrated the potentially catastrophic impacts of improperly handled hazardous materials, thousands of smaller-quantity incidents occur every year, causing significant damages, injuries, and fatalities. The new NFPA® Hazardous Materials Management Online Training meets the need for a program that helps personnel responsible for hazmat safety recognize issues and mitigate risks before they result in an emergency.
The series provides seven hours of training worth a total of 0.7 continuing education units (CEUs) and includes the following topics:
- Basics of hazardous materials
- Codes and standards
- Identification of hazardous materials
- Labeling of hazardous materials
- Storage and use locations
- Operation, maintenance, and emergency planning
- What happens when things go wrong
This web-based training offers the flexibility to learn at your own pace about the safe storage, handling, and use of materials defined as hazardous.
Hazardous Materials Management Online Training provides an engaging learning experience referencing requirements from NFPA 400, Hazardous Materials Code, NFPA 30, Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code, and other codes and standards. The series incorporates videos, animations, interactive exercises, case studies, knowledge checks, and downloadable resources to clearly and concisely present key information and reinforce the knowledge gained.
Key learning objectives include the following:
- Describe how properties are used to classify hazardous materials into specific hazard categories
- Apply commonly applicable code and standard requirements to mitigate life safety and property hazards in the storage, handling, and use of hazardous materials
- Explain the purpose and structure of a safety data sheet
- Effectively interpret an NFPA 704 hazard marking label
- Describe the fundamental requirements for the storage, handling, and use of hazardous materials according to NFPA 400, and begin applying them to your work
- Describe the need for and basic application of additional protection levels in the storage, handling, and use of hazardous materials
- Identify qualities of effective change management in the context of the storage, handling, and use of hazardous materials
- Recognize key components of effective operation, maintenance, and emergency plans
- Describe an effective response to an unplanned event involving hazardous materials
Train from the perspective of working with hazardous materials to learn the best practices for risk recognition and management.
The NFPA Hazardous Materials Management Online Training Series can benefit anyone who needs to understand hazmat properties and risks and determine protection methods to maintain a high level of safety.
