People working with hazardous materials often lack an understanding of essential safety requirements, raising the potential for avoidable incidents, property damage, and injuries. The all-new Hazardous Materials Basics Online Training helps individuals who encounter hazardous materials on the job—but are not responsible for their management—increase their understanding of dangers and contribute to better protecting their facility.
The five-part series provides three hours of training, eligible for 0.3 continuing education units (CEUs), and includes the following topics:
- Basics of hazardous materials
- Identification of hazardous materials
- Labeling hazardous materials
- Operation, maintenance, and emergency planning
- What happens when things go wrong

Hazardous Materials Basics Online Training features engaging videos, animations, case studies, interactive exercises, knowledge checks, and downloadable resources for an engaging experience that reinforces learning and retention.
Key learning objectives include the following:
- Apply commonly applicable NFPA 400, Hazardous Materials Code, NFPA 30, Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code, and other code and standard requirements to help mitigate life safety and property hazards in the storage, handling, and use of hazardous materials
- Effectively interpret an NFPA 704, Standard System for the Identification of the Hazards of Materials for Emergency Response, hazard marking label
- Recognize key components of effective operation, maintenance, and emergency plans
- Describe an effective response to an unplanned event involving hazardous materials
