  • Description

Energy Storage Systems (ESS) and solar panels are rapidly becoming a reality across the United States. To help the fire service handle the unique challenges presented by these new technologies, NFPA has developed the Energy Storage and Solar System Safety Training Course.

In approximately three hours, this self-paced program effectively trains students through animations (including 3D), engaging videos, review exercises, simulations, and engaging videos.

NFPA®'s self-paced online training Energy Storage and Solar Systems Safety Training teaches you how to safely deal with emergency situations involving high voltage commercial and residential energy storage and photovoltaic systems -- i.e., solar panels.

The interactive and dynamic online curriculum covers the following:

    • Introduction to energy storage and solar system concepts including applications, types, and terminology
    • Basic electrical theory
    • Introduction to battery energy storage (including Lead Acid, Lithium Ion, Sodium Sulfur, and Flow Batteries) and solar systems
    • Failure modes and hazards
    • Pre-incident planning
    • Emergency response procedures and more

These concepts are taught through the use of highly-interactive learning courses which include videos, graphics, 3D animations, simulations, and data review exercises, and you can repeat any section on demand, to help reinforce your knowledge.

Upon completion of the Energy Storage and Solar Systems Safety Online Training, you should be able to:

    • Effectively conduct pre-incident planning
    • Identify and operate battery and solar system emergency disconnects
    • Effectively conduct mitigation and emergency response procedures including investigations and air monitoring
    • Identify the various types of energy storage and solar systems
    • Understand basic battery and solar system function and design
    • Identify the various failure modes and hazards associated with ESS and solar
    • Respond to emergencies including electrolyte releases, overheated batteries, fires involving battery and solar systems, and environmental events
    • A built-in learning management system lets you exit the program at any time and return where you left off, so you can maximize time and schedule training around professional demands

Demonstrate your proficiency in course content by completing a series of data reviews at the conclusion of each training course and final scenario room activities, and pass these reviews and earn your Certificate of Attendance from NFPA.

The training process is delivered conveniently and remotely online so you can get it all done on your own terms, at your own pace.

    Current online training Learning Paths:

    • Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS®) Learning Path
The CFPS Learning Path is designed to be used in conjunction with the Fire Protection Handbook®. Candidates may only bring an original print copy of the NFPA Fire Protection Handbook, 20th edition, to the exam. If you do not already own the Fire Protection Handbook, it is available to purchase through the online catalog or at a local book distributor.
    • Certified Fire Plan Examiner (CFPE) Learning Path
The CFPE Learning Path is designed to be used in conjunction with NFPA 1, Fire Code, 2018 edition; NFPA 13, Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems, 2016 edition; NFPA 72®, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code®, 2016 edition; and NFPA 101®, Life Safety Code®, 2018 edition. Candidates may only bring an original print copy of the books to the exam. If you do not already own them, they are available to purchase through the online catalog or at a local book distributor.
    • Certified Fire Inspector I (CFI-I) Learning Path
The CFI-I Learning Path is designed to be used in conjunction with the 2018 and 2021 NFPA code sets which include: NFPA 1, Fire Code (2018 or 2021 edition); NFPA 13, Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems (2016 or 2019 edition); NFPA 25, Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems (2017 or 2020 edition); NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code (2016 or 2019 edition); and NFPA 101, Life Safety Code (2018 or 2021 edition). Candidates are encouraged to check with their jurisdiction to verify which code set is appropriate. The Certification Exam is applicable to either the 2018 or the 2021 code set. Candidates may only bring an original print copy of the books to the exam. If you do not already own them, they are available to purchase through the online catalog or at a local book distributor.
    • Water-Based Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance (WBITM) Learning Path
The WBITM Learning Path is designed to be used in conjunction with NFPA 25, Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems. Candidates are also expected to know system components, function, safety, and design principles through a comprehensive working knowledge of the following related codes and standards: NFPA 13, NFPA 13R, NFPA 14, NFPA 15, NFPA 16, NFPA 20, NFPA 22, NFPA 24, and NFPA 72. Additionally, due to the risks posed by energized pumps and other components, candidates should be familiar with NFPA 70E®. All of those codes and standards, including NFPA 25, will be provided as digital references during the exam.
    • Certified Water-Based Systems Professional (CWBSP) Learning Path
