Working at your own pace, these courses provide essential information every fire examiner needs to know, and deliver the type of critical knowledge needed for success in the NFPA Certified Fire Plan Examiner (CFPE) program.

    Upon completion of this core series, you should be able to:

    • State the goal of NFPA 13, list its major components, and define specific terms
    • State the difference between the use of Approved and Listed in the Standard, and the difference between the use of Shall and Should in NFPA 13
    • Cite the reasons why correct hazard selection is important
    • Differentiate between the different types of hazards
    • Identify the characteristics of various hazards
    • Explain how building, fire, and life safety codes impact the requirements for fire detection and alarm systems
    • Determine how NFPA 72 is used to design, install, and maintain a fire detection and alarm system and how the Code is structured
    • Describe the basic configuration of a fire detection and alarm system
    • Identify the four basic types of fire alarm circuits
    • Define specific terms used in NFPA 72
    • Explain the organization of the 2015 edition of NFPA 101 and key Code concepts
    • Describe NFPA 101 applicability for new and existing occupancies
    • Define and distinguish occupancy classifications and rehabilitation work categories
    • Determine hazards of contents, stories in height, and building construction types
