What type of building is it and what type of people will be accessing it? Learn how to determine the occupancy load for a specified space and how to determine the most effective way to help keep people safe in an emergency.
Different types of occupancies will be discussed in the CFPE Building Plan Review Online Training, including mercantile, assembly, business, mixed, incidental, and more. The people who would be visiting these buildings would relate to the type of occupancy. For example, an assembly occupancy might contain large numbers of people who are unfamiliar with the space and are, therefore, subject to indecision regarding the best means of egress in an emergency. Classification of occupancy must also take into account that some buildings could contain multiple occupancies, such as a hotel with restaurants, bars, and a gift shop.
The CFPE Building Plan Review Online Training provides an overview of occupancy classification hazards and examples of multiple occupancies. In addition, participants will learn how to calculate occupant load. You will review components of egress, as well as apply considerations such as travel distance, path of travel, and arrangement when evaluating means of egress. Lastly, you will apply your knowledge in an exit analysis.
In addition, participants will learn how to calculate occupant load using net versus gross floor area. Lastly, they will review components of egress, exits and doors, as well as apply considerations such as travel distance, path of travel and arrangement of egress when evaluating egress capacity.
Upon completion you should be able to:
- Identify the applicable codes and standards related to the classification of occupancies
- Describe the occupancy classification types used within the jurisdiction
- Describe the code requirements, operational features, and fire hazards presented by each occupancy classification
- Determine the occupancy classification of the building or space depicted on a set of plans
- Explain how different factors might impact occupant load
- Determine the occupant load factor based on building or space use
- Calculate gross and net floor area
- Identify means of egress components
- Describe the relationship of fixed fire protection systems to egress requirements
- Determine egress requirements for a space or building based on calculated occupant load
- Evaluate the code compliance of an egress system
