    NFPA®'s self-paced online training Energy Storage Systems Safety Training, Fire Service Edition* teaches the fire service how to safely deal with emergency situations involving high voltage commercial and residential energy storage systems. Upon completing the program, students will receive a certificate for their successful completion.

    Energy Storage Systems (ESS) are rapidly becoming a reality across the United States. To help the fire service handle the unique challenges presented by these new technologies, NFPA has developed the Energy Storage System Safety Training Course. In approximately four hours, this self-paced program effectively trains students through engaging videos, animations (including 3D animations), simulations, and review exercises.

    The dynamic online curriculum covers:

    • Introduction to energy storage system concepts including ESS applications, types, and terminology.
    • The program also covers basic electrical theory, introduction to battery energy storage systems (including Lead Acid, Lithium Ion, Sodium Sulfur, and Flow Batteries), failure modes and hazards, pre-incident planning, emergency response procedures and more

    These concepts are taught through the use of highly-interactive learning modules which include videos, graphics, 3D animations, simulations, and data review exercises, and you can repeat any section on demand.

    Upon completion of the four modules you should be able to:

    • Identify the various types of energy storage systems
    • Understand basic battery function and design
    • Identify the various failure modes and hazards associated with ESS
    • Effectively conduct pre-incident planning
    • Identify and operate emergency system disconnects
    • Effectively conduct mitigation and emergency response procedures including investigations and air monitoring
    • Respond to emergencies including electrolyte releases, overheated batteries, fires, and environmental events

    A built-in learning management system lets you exit the program at any time and return where you left off, so you can maximize time and schedule training around professional demands.

    Demonstrate your proficiency in course content by completing a series of data reviews at the conclusion of each training module and final scenario room activities. Pass these reviews and earn your Certificate of Attendance from NFPA.
