NFPA 34 addresses dipping, roll coating, flow coating, printing, and similar processes using flammable or combustible liquids. Parallel to the requirements in NFPA 33 for spray application, this document provides rules for:

Major changes in the 2011 NFPA 34: Standard for Dipping, Coating, and Printing Processes Using Flammable or Combustible Liquids include:

  • Appropriate changes throughout the standard to address basic fire safety for printing operations
  • Amendments to the scope to include vapor degreasing processes and to exempt processes using only Class IIIB combustible liquids
  • A provision to prevent coating of workpieces whose surface temperature exceeds the boiling point of the coating material
  • Provisions to describe the hazardous (classified) areas around printing presses and ink reservoirs
  • A requirement for means to dissipate static electricity from nonconductive substrates
  • Maximum quantities of flammable and combustible liquids revised for consistency with NFPA 30: Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code.
  • Improved requirements for housekeeping and handling of impregnated rags and waste
  • A new requirement for solvent recovery systems to meet appropriate provisions of NFPA 30
